MAJOR GEN. CALEB VANCE HAYNES'' OFFICER''S RECORD BOOK SIGNED BY SHELDON H. WHEELER

CALEB VANCE HAYNES (1895-1966) U.S. Air Force major general and one of the most important and talented military aviators and commanders of World War II. Haynes organized the Assam-Burma-China Ferry Command and evacuated Burma with the Chinese and RAF. He then went to China to organize and command the Bomber Command of the China Air Task Force under Gen. Claire Chennault. He later returned to India to organize the India Air Task Force of the 10th Air Force. A fine association item, Haynes' 1919 "Officer's Record Book", 12pp. 12mo., [France], 1919. The book, signed by Haynes within, records officers' comments on Haynes' performance while serving in Europe. Three officers offer glowing reports, including Major SHELDON H. WHEELER Major Sheldon H. Wheeler, future commander of Luke Field on Ford Island, who would be killed in a crash on 13 July 1921. Luke Field would be named after Wheeler, and it would become a prime target of Japanese bombers on December 7, 1941. He notes that Haynes: "is a very good pilot, likes to fly but very much inclined to be reckless..." Covers worn, one sheet disbound, else very good.
