Rare with Fascinating Italian Notations: Machzor, Rome Custom, 2 Sections - mantova, 1718-1720
Machzor, Rome custom. with commentaries and additions. Two sections in a single volume.
Section I: for the days of the week, Sabbath, Rosh Chodesh, Hanukkah, the 10th of Tevet, Purim, Passover, commentary on Maschet Avot by the Rambam, Shavu'ot, Tisha BeAv - Mantova, 1718. [2], 117 leaves. With Megillat Antiochus.
Section II: Selichot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret, Ta;anit Tzibur, prayer for the sick. leaves 91-93 include comments by Avraham Yedidya ben Rabbi Menachem Shimshon Basel. Mantova, 1720. On the colophon: 92, [1] leaves.
In the National Library, the book appears in the Rare Book Collection.
Engraved title pages. In one place, a fine engraving with an interesting notation: "ברכת העומר אל תשכח".
Stains and wear due to extensive use. Professional taping to the first title page and more. Wine stains and candle drops on the Passover Haggadah. Tear stains and candle drops on the Kinot for Tisha BeAv. Some gatherings with many tears, often affecting the text. Ancient binding, typical of the period. Fair-good overall condition.
On the two back flyleaves, on both sides of the leaf, many notations in ancient Italian script, by the members of the famed Ottolenghi and Poah families. The writers describe varied events in their lives such as the passing of relatives and more. These are outdone by a writer named Asher Otto [abbreviation of Ottolenghi] who described, using poetic language, a miracle that happened to him in Kislev 1775.
On verso of the back board, a touching notation. The writer, Yaakov Eliya (Poah) wrote a short rhymed lament for his brother (see Hebrew catalog text).
On the last leaf, a lengthy calligraphic notation in square artistic script, titled "מצבת קבורת משה יעקב פואה" and describing the man and his deeds: "נלחם בבחרותו במלחמות נאפוליאון ראשון... נשוא פנים וירא שמים... שנת התרכ"ו לפ"ג".
