Exceptional Tall Nok "Couching Warrior" Figure, 1500 BCE-500 CE
Africa, Nigeria, Kaduna State, Village of Nok, Nok Culture 1500 BCE-500 CE. Exceptional terracotta example with great detail remaining to the face and piece overall, the figure is crouching on one knee and the other bent with hand raised about to strike. Size 23" H

Nok figures and the discovery of the culture circa 1928 has indicated the remains of the Nok civilization once span a large area of Nigeria, Niger, and portions of Eastern Benin. The figures are marked by a style of elongated faces with horizontal triangular eyes and often depict warriors or important figures. The terracotta when in great condition exhibits a smooth slip and when worn the shell or white specks become visible in the layers revealed with wear and handling.

Vetted by a member of The Ethnic Arts Council, Ex-Addison Robichaud Collection
Condition: As-is losses, some old breaks, much of slip finish still remaining
