Exquisite Spear from Colonial New Mexico, 16th-18th C.
Iberian Peninsula, Spain, used in the colonial New Mexico or New Spain 16th-18th century. Long shafted lance or spear with an errored spiked lower point and very early Spanish spear head in bulbous form with a raised central ridge between the doubled edged blade terminating sharply to a point. Lances were a primary weapon for Spanish cavalry units. Mounted conquistadors and soldiers known as (caballeros) would charge at enemy forces, aiming to impale opponents with the pointed tips of their lances. This tactic allowed them to exploit the mobility and shock value of mounted warriors.Size 81 1/2" H, spear 6" L, spear butt 6 1/2"
