John Burger Salt Glaze Rochester NY 2 Gallon Jug
John Burger, Rochester, New York salt glaze two-gallon stoneware jug with a rounded body, thin bottleneck, and handle, 19th c. Decorated along the side with blue flowers. With an impressed mark along the side.
Height: 15 in x diameter: 8 1/2 in.
Condition: The jug is in good condition in general. There are red minute accretions throughout the piece; there is a line of red accretion along the area where the handle and the body meets. There is green accretion below the handle. There is a noticeable firing flaw to the flower. In the mid-part of the jug, there is an adhesive residue that measures 3 1/2 inches. Towards the foot, there is a 1/2 inch long crack; there is another 1/4 inch long crack to the mid-part. There is a glue residue below the neck. Below the residue, there is another residue that is 1/4 inch long. In between two residues, there is a minute green accretion. By the accretion, there is an unevenness to the surface, approx. 1 inch long, possibly original to the piece. To its rim, there is a major loss that is 1 3/4 inch long; no other chips, cracks, or dents to the rim. To its footrim, there is a 1/4 inch long chip; wear throughout, consistent with its age and use. There are green accretions along its underside. No sign of restoration under UV inspection.
