Выдающийся русский мастер гравюры на дереве и линолеуме Иван Николаевич Павлов одним из первых утвердил новый вид гравюры, в котором мастер-гравер является самостоятельным художником. Основным направлением творчества Павлова стал жанр городского пейзажа. Главным делом своей жизни он считал воссоздание облика старой Москвы — ее архитектурных памятников, тихих улиц и переулков, живописных уголков города. Тоновые и цветные ксилографии и линогравюры Павлова выпускались отдельными листами и в виде альбомов, часто составлявших тематические серии: «Уходящая Москва» (1915, 1919, 1921), «Останкино» (1917), «Старая Москва» (1918, 1919, 1947), «Московские дворики» (1918, 1925), «Уголки Москвы» (1919, 1921), «Уголки старой Москвы» (1945). Государственная премия СССР (1943).
