"ותהיינה ידיכם אמונה כחומה בצורה להגן עלינו מכל מכשול ופגע" Historical - draft of the rabbinate document given to Maran Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, the first Rav of HaEidah HaChareidit, laden with superlatives and historical details - Jerusalem, 1918.
Background: in 1873, Maran Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld immigrated to Eretz Yisrael and was soon liked by all the leading rabbis of Jerusalem headed by the Maharil Diskin. With the end of World War I and the onset of the British Mandate, Rabbeinu initiated the establishment of HaEidah HaChareidi, being appointed its first Rav and Av Beit Din of its Badatz.
This rabbinate document was written by the rabbis and activists of Jerusalem, who describe Maran Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld with many superlatives: "כתר תורה, נזר ועטרה, צפירת תפארה, לראש גבר...., גאון הקדש והדרה.... מורנו ורבנו יוסף חיים זאננענפעלד נרו יאיר ויזרח".
They also describe the reasons leading them to choose Maran as the leader of the community:
"ועתה רבינו הגדול, הן עוד בחיי רבותינו הגאונים נוחי נפש זיע"א היית ראש וראשון לכל דבר שבקדושה, ותהי לעיינים בכל ענייני הציבור ומילי דמתא, וגם בשנים האחרונות שנות התנועה והמרובות בשאלות החיים השונות, עמדת על יד מרן זקן הגאונים מוהר"י דיסקין שליט"א, ותהיינה ידיכם אמונה כחומה בצורה להגן עלינו מכל מכשול ופגע".
The document is signed by dozens of the rabbis and activists of Jerusalem (a list handwritten by the scribe and not hand-signed by them) including Rabbi Mordechai Leib Rubin, Rabbi Moshe Wallach, Rabbi Pinchas Epstein, Rabbi Menachem Ben Zion Shapira, Rabbi Yisrael Yitzchak Reisman and many more.
