Sefer Cherev L’Hashem u’leYisrael by Ephraim Deinard. First edition, New Orleans 1923.
Cherev L’Hashem u’leYisrael, “against the work ‘Jesus of Nazareth: His Life, Times & Teaching’ by Dr. Joseph Klausner…’ by Ephraim Deinard. First edition, New Orleans 1923. 160 pages.
Background: the vague work by Dr. Joseph Klausner ‘Jesus of Nazareth: His Life, Times & Teaching’ riled the Jewish intellectual Ephraim Deinard (1846-1930), who responded with this witty and clever work using the best of Jewish folklore to dismantle Klausner's ideas. He also printed a dedication on the title page which referenced Parshat Toldot: “to Dr. Klausner, come near that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not?”. On the back of the title page is a contrasting declaration: “If Klausner is able... to find in this article a hint against the righteousness of the Christian Jesus, I give him the license…”.
New binding, overall good condition.
