The first Hebrew book printed in North Africa: Zera Yitzhak—first edition, Tunisia 1768. Copy with yichus.
Zera Yitzhak, a work on tractates in Shas, by Rabbi Yitzhak Lombrozo. First (rare) edition. This is probably the first Hebrew book printed in North Africa. Categorized as rare by the National Library. [4], 278, [6], 32 leaves in the original; this copy is missing one leaf at the beginning (not the body of the work) and 2 additional pages from the end.
The body of the book is composed / cobbled together from several different copies. New binding is handsomely inscribed, the title page is professionally repaired, many pages were professionally cleaned and others repaired with worming holes filled in. Stains, overall good condition for a book this rare and old.
Notes in Mizrahi handwriting. The title page: “for the bachur Yosef”. The approbations leaf has 2 signatures with the name: Avraham Abukara” (Rabbi Avraham ben Rabbi Moshe Abukara, a sage and rabbi of Tunis, during the period of the gaon Rabbi Avraham Hajaj). He wrote an important work on sfekot called “Ben Avraham”. He was in charge of the Portuguese community in Tunis (Arzei HaLevanon p. 71).
