Nice copy with a yechus of ownership: Heichal HaKodesh, an early work of kabbalah. First edition, Amsterdam 1653

“Exegesis on the order of prayers for the whole year and their secrets and kavanot” by Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, known as the Elbaz. An important, foundational work quoted widely, on the kavanot of prayers and the halachot according to the kabbalah prior to that of the Ari, based on the Zohar. Brought to printing (with the addition of a long introduction and a rhyming poem on the 10 Sefirot with an acrostic of his name) by the kabbalist who fought Shabtai Zvi-ism, Rabbi Yaakov ben Aharon Sasportas, with notes from the kabbalist Rabbi Aharon HaSabuni. 7, 76 pages. New binding, repaired cover (defective), tape and a small tear in the margins of p. 2, stains and defects on some pages but otherwise in perfect condition, very good overall condition.

The cover has an old signature of ownership from the period of the book’s printing: “I the young Yom ben Harush”—probably referring to Rabbi Yom Tov ben Harush the First of Morocco, who lived in the 17th century in Sefrou (Morocco). Malchei Rabanan features an old pamphlet in his handwriting with his chiddushim. The page after the introduction has a note of ownership: “I the purchaser, Yehuda Deloya” and “I the young Mordechai ben Yehuda Deloya, I the young Masoud Bonan.” Rabbi Yehuda ben Rabbi Mordechai Deloya and his father were both sages of Marrakesh.

The author, Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon Elbaz, lived in the mid-sixteeenth century. He lived in Taroudant, Morocco, where he began writing his book in 1575, in parallel with the work of the Ari and his students, which shows why his work is not based on that of the Ari. His students reference him with great respect, which testifies to the group of kabbalists in the area who were led by him. His students seem to have included: Rabbi Yehuda Chanin (the Minchat Yehuda and Sefer HaOhr and more), Rabbi Yitzhak HaKohen (the Ginat Bitan) and Rabbi Yaakov Ifergen (the Perach Shushan) and more. See Otzar Sifrei Chochmei Morocco, p. 96.
