Rabbi Eliyahu Gottmacher of Geriaditz (1796-1874), one of the first students of Rabbi Akiva Eiger, and a great Kabbalist, was revered and respected by the rabbis of his generation.
He had a special personality that led him to become a kind of "Chasidic Rebbe" in Germany where it was not customary.
Since his blessings that came to fruition, thousands of people flocked to him for salvation and mercy until eventually they had to publish advertisments in the newspapers to quell the overwhelming influx of visitors(!).
