DIMINUTIVE SECRETARY
New Jersey, 1820-1840, walnut and poplar. Two-piece, the upper section with a fall front concealing cubbies and drawers; the lower section with two drawers and turned legs. One of the interior drawers has an inscription "This desk from P.H. Pulis. Bought off Mrs. D.C. Sturr Jany 28, 1898. In remembrance of my grandfather and paid $5 for it. P.S. Pulis." 53.25" high, 23" wide, 23" deep. Provenance: a western New York collection; Old Town Hill Antiques (Indiana). P.S. Pulis seems to be Peter Samuel Pulis (1863-1934) of Bergen County, New Jersey, oldest son of Samuel Pulis and Leah Valentine Pulis. Samuel Pulis operated a store at Campgaw, that he had taken over from his father, Peter H. Pulis, the grandfather who owned this desk. Peter H. Pulis (1815-1897) was born in Bergen County, married Maria Demarest in 1835, and had at least six children, including Samuel, who was born in 1841. One of Samuel's younger sisters was Margaret, who married Daniel C. Sturr, the Mrs. D.C. Sturr in the inscription and the aunt of the purchaser, Peter Samuel Pulis. The desk was purchased the year after Peter H. Pulis died.
Condition: Refinished.
