Charles Bird King (American, 1785-1862) Original Lithograph
Hand colored lithograph on paper of ME-TE-A, A POTTAWATOMIE CHIEF. From the history of the Indian Tribes of North America.
Sight: 17 inches tall by 12 inches wide. Matted only and under protective plastic. The initials RT or inscribed on the bottom right of lithograph. Small tear on left side. Charles Bird King painted the visiting chiefs as they came to Washington to negotiate treaties filling the war department’s gallery. Thomas McKenney dreamed of producing a portfolio of these images and written account. Fortunately, he made copies of the paintings with the help of the prominent artist, Henry Inman because the original paintings by Charles Bird King were destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian. This historic folio was then published in Philadelphia by Frederick W. Greenough in 1836 from Thomas L. McKenney & James Halla‘s History of the Indian Tribes of North America.

Artist: After Charles Bird King
Country of Origin: America

Condition: Age related wear.
