Sefer HaGilgulim First edition. First printed sefer of R. Chaim Vital. Frankfurt 1684.
Kabbalistic work on the “Transmigration of the Soul”, by R. Chaim Vital.
In this sefer R. Chaim Vital expounds on the teachings of the Arizal that souls migrate through several bodies in order to rid themselves of particles of evil.
Originally, the Rabbonim of Frankfurt opposed the publication of this work due to the Shabtai Tzvi movement which was then rampant, fearful of charlatans who would claim to be reincarnations of Shabtai Tzvi. Consequently, the editor, R. Dovid Grunhut, a renowned Talmid Chochom and Mekubal in his own right, commissioned a Gentile printer to print the sefer. (See M. Waxman vol. 2 pp. 417-18.)
Vinograd Frankfurt 59. Grunhut press. [1], 45. Pages. 18 cm. Fine condition. Some repairs and reinforcement on a few leaves at times slightly affecting text. Modern binding.
Opening bid $350
