Mikveh Yisroel. First Edition. New York 1920’s.
Rare Yiddish work titled Mikveh Yisroel, by R. Dovid Miller containing detailed instructions with extensive diagrams on how to build a proper kosher Mikvah in the privacy of one’s home, in an effort to encourage the use of Mikvah observance in an era where Mikvaos in the USA were few and far between, and observance in general was lax. Published with several prominent approbations including R. Moshe Zevulun Margolis and R. Shaul Elchonon Yaffe. Apparently this novel idea was met with some rabbinical opposition, by those who were concerned about the lack of supervision associated with Mikvaos in one’s home.
Born in Lithuania approx. 1869, R. Miller studied in the Slabodka Yeshiva and received Semicha from R. Yitzchok Elchonon and others before immigrating to America. After serving as a Rabbi in the Northeast in several communities, he abandoned the Rabbinate, writing that he did not wish to profit from it, and headed west, settling in Oakland, CA. At the time of the publication of this work, he was well settled in Oakland where he ran a successful real-estate and construction business.
