Passport form Nazi Germany. Marked with A Red “J”. Historical Item!
Rare passport that belonged to a Jew from Hamburg Germany, with an anti-Semitic bold red “J” on the first page.
On October 5, 1938, in accordance with the Nuremberg Laws, the Nazis issued a decree invalidating a Jew’s passports until they were marked with a “J” for “Jude”. This was part of calculated scheme to identify and thus persecute the Jews. Later, on January 1, 1939, the Nazis added a proviso which required the Jews with “non-Jewish” names to also add the name “Israel” or “Sarah”.
On page 15 of the passport, there appears a Nazi stamp with the swastika, dated 1939. The holder of this passport eventually escaped Germany to the United States via various countries, all documented in this passport.
In today’s age, with Holocaust denial unfortunately rampant, artifacts like these are important evidence of one of our people’s darkest hours.
Excellent condition.
