• Sefer Eilim, by R. Yosef Shlomo Delmedigo of Candia. 5 parts in one. 1- Sefer Eilim (Odessa 1870). 2- Ma’yan Ganim (Odessa 1865), which includes the author’s portrait. 3- Chukas Shomayim (Odessa 1868). 4- Gevuros HaShem (Odessa 1867). 5- Ma’yan Chasom (Odessa 1867). An important early sefer dealing with Astronomy and the Sciences from a Jewish perspective.
This is the second edition of the work that was originally published by R. Menashe Ben Yisroel in Amsterdam, 1629. This edition includes additional notes, corrections and a biography of the author.
R. Yosef Shlomo Rofeh Delmedigo, known as Yoshor Mi-Candia, was born in 1591. At the age of 15, he began to study the laws of nature, philosophy, mathematics and medicine at the University of Padua. Galileo Galilei was one of his teachers. His many works deal with a wide range of subjects including Astronomy, Algebra, Chemistry, Mechanics, translations of Greek texts, Copernicus’s theories, a book on paradoxes, a debate with Aristotle’s Philosophy , a book of logic and more. Some of his books were never published.
