R. Chaim Ozer Grodzensky. Regarding Cremation! Lot Includes the Sefer Chayei Olam (Berlin 1905) Referenced in the Letter. Vilna 1938.
Autograph letter by R. Chaim Ozer Grodzensky to R. Yom Tov Lipmann Gurwitz of Melbourne, Australia, regarding cremation. In the responsa, R. Chaim Ozer references the Sefer Chayei Olam, which is included in this lot.
Chayei Olam- Collected letters expounding on the severity of cremation compiled by R. Meir Lerner.
R. Meir Lerner (1857-1930), served in various important rabbinical positions, including as Rav of the Federation of Synagogues in London and as the Chief Rabbi of Altona. He was a vigorous opponent of the Reform movement, particularly in regard to their practice to permit cremation in place of traditional full burial. Consequently, R. Meir refused to permit the burial of such ashes in a Jewish cemetery. In order to support his position, he gathered responsa from approximately 200 Rabbonim from all over the world, running the gamut from Lithuanian authorities such as the Rogatchover and R. Yechiel Michel Epstein (Oruch HaShulchan), to Chassidic Rebbes such as R. Chaim Elazar Shapiro of Munkacs (Minchas Elozor), German Rabbinical scholars such as R. Asher Marx of Darmstadt and leading Rabbinical figures from Eretz Yisroel including the Aderes and the Sdei Chemed.
With an additional title page in German.
Itzkowski press. XXVI, 133 pages. 22 cm. Very fine condition. (With library stamps of R. Yosef (Fiemer) Slutzker (the second).
R. Chaim Ozer Grodzensky (1863-1940), was born into a distinguished rabbinical family and was renowned from a young age for his brilliant mind coupled with great diligence. He initially learned in Eisheshok and later in Volozhin under R. Chaim Soloveitchik. He married the daughter of R. Eliyahu Eliezer Grodzensky, a leading Rov in Vilna (son-in-law of R. Yisroel Salanter), whom he later succeeded. He dedicated his life to the needs of the Jewish People and was recognized as the leading Posek and spiritual leader of his generation, consulted on virtually every Jewish communal issue. He played an instrumental role in preserving Lithuanian Yeshivos during the beginning of the Communist era, and led the yeshivas of Poland and Russia after the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939, arranging for these Yeshivos to relocate to Lithuanian villages.
