Although with the advent of the printing press many seforim were printed on a great variety of topics, for many years Sifrei Kabbalah continued to be handwritten. This was primarily a means to ensure that they would not fall into unworthy hands. It was not until much later that Sifrei Kabbalah were printed.
Various attempts were made to render into diagram-form the foundations of Kabbalah concerning the structure of the spiritual universe. Known as the Ilan HaGadol (“Great Tree”), Ilan HaKadosh (“Holy Tree”) or simply as the Ilan, this chart provides a clearer picture of the exact layout of this highly complex system as taught by the Arizal.
