R. Yechezkel Levenstein. Bnei Brak 1955
Long autograph letter by R. Yechezkel Levenstein to a talmid who had just become engaged. He writes “with regard to you asking about my health, I need to thank Hashem for my health as He is the true doctor and my health has been restored. And with regard to your request that I mention you in my Tefillos, I hope to remember to do so, but the main thing is that ‘B’derech Sh’Adam Rotzeh Leileich Meilichin Oso’”. Concluding with warm blessings.
R. Chatzkel Levenstein (1895-1974), was one of the pre-eminent Mussar giants of his generation. Orphaned at a young age, he learned first in Lomza, then in Radin under the Chofetz Chaim, and finally at the renowned Mussar Yeshiva of Kelm. He served as Mashgiach at the Yeshivos of Kletsk and Mir in Lithuania, and then Yeshivas Lomza in Petach Tikva. Following the passing of the legendary Mirrer Mashgiach R. Yeruchum Levovitz, R. Chatzkel was called back to the Mir to serve as Mashgiach. Together with the other heads of the Yeshiva, he led Yeshivas Mir through its tumultuous exile in Shanghai. After the Holocaust, he traveled with the Mirrer Yeshiva to America but shortly thereafter he returned to Eretz Yisroel, where he assumed the post of Mashgiach in the Ponevezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak.
