***Auction Highlight*** 1922 $50 Large Size Gold Certificate Ulysses S. Grant FR-1200 Grades vf, very fine. The 1922 $50 gold certificate is a simple design with lots of white space, designed to draw the eye to engraved elements that were present, in keeping with the design philosophy of the time. A large portrait of Ulysses S. Grant is the focal point of the face flanked by gold design elements including a 50 protector, serial numbers, and the Treasury seal. The back printed in a gold-orange color has a simple denomination counter. The print run of this variety was 5,184,000. The surviving population is in the hundreds. The Series of 1922 notes have an inscription, not present on the earlier issues, in the left field, "THIS CERTIFICATE IS A LEGAL TENDER / IN THE AMOUNT THEREOF IN PAYMENT OF ALL / DEBTS AND DUES, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE / ACTS OF MARCH 14, 1900, AS AMENDED / ON DECEMBER 24, 1919." The back is the same design as the preceding type. The orange-gold color tended to fade. Today, notes with bright backs are worth more than those with faded color, regardless of the grade.
