***Auction Highlight*** 1879-s Gold Liberty Double Eagle 20 Graded Select Unc By USCG. Up for Auction is a scarce 1879-s Gold $20 Double Eagle in uncirculated condition. From a robust mintage of 1.2 million pieces, the 1879-S Liberty double eagle was heavily circulated at the time of issue and many examples were used to settle large accounts in foreign trade. Many coins have been repatriated from overseas holdings in recent years, but most examples seen have excessive bagmarks from rough storage and transport. Mint State coins are scarce in today's market and high-grade examples are rare. Michael Fuljenz and Douglas Winter write in their Type Three Double Eagles, 1877-1907 reference that the 1879-S is often found weakly struck. Our Select Uncirculated offering exhibits above average striking characteristics. The obverse star centers are strong, as is most of Liberty's hair, the eagle's plumage, and peripheral lettering, all areas that typically are weak. Additionally, attractive orange-gold and yellow-green coloration bathes the lustrous surfaces of both sides. Distributed contact marks prevent a higher grade. Fortunately, though, these are fewer and of less severity than usually seen on surviving specimens of this issue. Trends on this Rare issue are ms63 $39,500 ; ms62 $14,600 - To date only 10 example, many of which are likely resubmitted coins, have graded finer.
