Eidut LeYisrael [evangelical periodical].
Volume I, number 1. Text entirely in Hebrew.
pp. 16. Brittle, ex-library. Needs rebinding. 8vo. Goldman, 1063.
Alfred Centre, New York: The American Sabbath Tract Society 1888
The first issue of a Christian monthly aimed at evangelizing Jews published in Hebrew. As a contemporary reviewer for The Christian Union explains: “You may wonder what use there can be for a Christian paper printed in pure Hebrew, a language which not one Jew in half a dozen can thoroughly understand…It appeals to the thinking class of Jews…and its whole outlook is toward the preservation and restoration of the Hebrew national spirit” (Vol. 38, No. 12). Edited by a Jewish convert to Christianity named Hayyim Theophilus Lucky (formerly Chaim Yedidyah Wolf Pollak).
