Edict issued by Baron Franz Krieg von Hochfelden. Kreisschreiben des k.k. Galizischen Landesguberniums über das Verfahren bei der Eidesablegung der Israeliten - O postępowaniu przy wykonywaniu przysięgi przez Izraelitów
[“On the Conduct and Execution of the Oath by the Israelites.”]
Text in two columns, German and Polish. pp. 7, (1 blank). Stained. Unbound. Folio.
Lvov, 20th December, 1846.
Regulations concerning Jewish oaths sworn in legal and court proceedings. As non-Christians, Jews had their oaths modified, whereby Rabbis were summoned to warn the given Jewish witness against perjury.
This specifically Jewish oath, known as ‘More Judaico’ was a special form of legal process that was required of Jews in European courts of law until the dawn of the 20th century. Rooted in antisemitism and modified over the centuries, the taking of the More Judaico was accompanied at times by ceremonies often intentionally humiliating or painful.
Lvov (Lemberg, today, Lviv) was the capital of Austrian Galicia, from where the Imperial Austrian Monarchic Council issued decrees that related to the Jewish community.
