LETTER FROM THE OVERLAND CAMPAIGN written by Private Myer Levy (1839-1909) of Company C, 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry.
In this letter Levy is most perceptive as to the progress of the Overland Campaign, noting incidents involving Grant, Lee, Sheridan and other generals. He records the disastrous results of cavalry actions and expresses concern that Union prisoners are often killed in cold blood. Just 12 of 48 men from his company returned from a recent mission and he records here of his hope that Asch too may return - no doubt referencing Myer Asch, a fellow Jewish Philadelphian and horse soldier. Includes complaints of minimal rations consisting of hard tack, coffee with a scrap of bacon.
Levy is best remembered as the “Damyankee Jew” invited to a Passover Seder in a southern city occupied by Union troops.
