Or HaGanuz (Teachings of the Baal HaTanya) – First Three Editions – Zhovkva, 1800 (Incomplete Copy) / Lviv, 1850 / Warsaw, 1887
First three editions of Or HaGanuz LaTzaddikim – practices and Chassidic discourses on the Torah portions by R. Aharon Katz of Apta, Rabbi of Żelechów and Biłgoraj (author of Keter Shem Tov). The book was printed about three years after the Tanya by the Rebbe Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the Alter Rebbe (in 1797), and the author, a leading Chassidic Tzaddik, often relies on the Tanya. The author cites the Tanya in almost every Parashah and it contributes the basic principles of his system. The present lot contains the first three editions of the book:
• Zhovkva: Mordechai Rabinstein, 1800. First edition. Signature: "Natan Yosef HaKohen Scharf".
[55] leaves. Missing 9 leaves (title page and 8 additional leaves in the body and end of the book). 18 cm. Most leaves in poor condition. Stains and heavy wear. Close trimming of margins, and large open tears heavily affecting text. Disconnected leaves. Without binding.
• Lemberg (Lviv): Feiga Grohsman managed by David Hirsch Schrenzel, 1850. Second edition, with approbation of the Maggid of Kozhnitz (to first edition).
[60] leaves. 19 cm. Good condition. Stains and light damage. Stamps. New binding.
• Warsaw: Yosef Unterhendler, 1887. With approbation of the Maggid of Kozhnitz (to first edition). This edition suffers from omissions and censorship. Stamp of R. Yosef David Ziskind [possibly the attendant of Rebbe Yosef (Yosele) Friedman of Rimanov].
[1], 2-49 leaves. 21.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Damage and wear. New binding.
R. Aharon HaKohen of Apta (Opatów), contemporary of R. Elimelech of Lizhensk and disciple of the Chozeh of Lublin. Author of Keter Shem Tov – the renowned compendium of the Baal Shem Tov's teachings, and of the Tefillah Yesharah – Keter Nehora siddur. His book Or HaGanuz LaTzaddikim was at first published anonymously.
