WALASSE TING ABSTRACT PAINTING "THE HORSE"
Walasse Ting (Asian American, 1929-2010)
Abstract painting, "The Horse", oil on canvas, signed on reverse Ting, 19 December 1958. Ht: 43.5" Wd: 57" Framed

Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner. Attached are two documents illustrating the relationship between Walasse Ting and the consignor’s family. The first is a letter from Ting to Isadore Marder regarding a portrait. The second is a letter and accompanying photograph from the Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on the occasion of a visit from Walasse and Natalie Ting and Isadore Marder.

A note from the consignor: My parents were introduced to Walasse Ting in 1957 by Ilya and Resia Schor, two well-known New York artists who were close friends. Ting had recently come to the US via Paris shortly after his escape from Red China. Ting's family was viewed with disfavor by the communist government, and Ting actually had a price on his head. Ilya Schor advised my father that Ting was a talented artist worth his attention. My parents bought a watercolor portrait of two old friends being reunited after a long separation. My father took Ting shopping for clothes and gave him a stipend of $100 per month.

In 1957 and 1958, my parents together with another couple owned a summer camp. Ting was engaged as the arts counselor for the summer of 1958. At this camp, Ting painted the large horse you now have on consignment. I actually watched him do the work. He also painted the portrait in oil of my mother you also have on consignment. Most of the pieces you have are personally inscribed by Ting to my parents. There is a portrait of my father with a sketch of my mother lying on her back in the nude. In his inscription, Ting wishes my father great joy with my mother.

He lived in Manhattan where he worked. He was a frequent visitor, however, and never failed to bring me firecrackers. Ting introduced my parents to other artists including Sam Francis and Karel Apel. Their relationship endured from their first meeting to Ting's death in Amsterdam.

Auction buying is wholesale and not the same as retail store or retail internet buying. There are no returns based on condition. Our auction items are mostly vintage, mostly from estates, and are not in perfect condition. The items are sold ''as is'', and we are acting as agents, not as principals. Accordingly, prospective buyers are entirely responsible for determining the physical condition of lots prior to and as a condition to bidding. Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any property in which they are interested before the auction takes place. To assist prospective bidders in this endeavor, we offer in person open-house preview days prior to the auction, and also provide written condition reports in response to emailed requests submitted to  info@kamelotauctions.com . If a bidder is unable to view an item in person, they are responsible for obtaining/requesting a condition report and/or additional photographs prior to bidding to determine an article's condition, size and any other pertinent information. We strive to be fair and forthright with our descriptions and condition reports, however bidders must acknowledge that antique items often show normal signs of use and wear, which might not be specified in a condition report. The absence of a condition report does not indicate the absence of condition issues with the lot. Please note that condition reports are presented as expert opinions, and are not intended as statements of fact. The accuracy of written or verbal condition reports is not guaranteed. Furthermore, inquiries submitted less than 24 hours prior to auction may not guarantee a response. Except as stated in the Limited Warranty in Kamelot's Conditions of Sale ( https://www.kamelotauctions.com/terms.php ), all property is sold ''as is'' without any representation or warranty of any kind by Kamelot or the seller.
