"Aktzia" (Roundup of Jews for transport to the death camps) – Oil on Canvas – 1942 - а сопов – Extremely Rare
The painting depicts two overcrowded groups of people. Under the group on the upper part – an image of an animal, a watchdog or fox. The group on the right side of the painting is guarded by several armed soldiers. Behind them are additional images of people and animals. On the left side there is a defining, semi-circle long path. The background is obscured and seems like a thicket or a yard clear of houses and trees. The cold colors of the painting indicate the confused and panicked atmosphere.
The Germans ordered the Jews to round up at a central location in order to be sent to labor camps. They were allowed to take money and few belongings. Actually, they were sent from the ghettoes to death camps. Such a roundup was called an "Aktzia" and it was exemplary organized. During the roundup itself, the Germans behaved cruelly, murdering many Jews while they were being gathered.
Few managed to escape these roundups. The punishment of a Jew who dared not to present himself was bitter. Due to this horrible reality, it is rare to find an authentic painting from the period.
The painter is unknown. He signed in Cyrillic script: а. Сопов 1942.
A horrifying, significant, extremely rare painting!
Size: 38x49 cm. Old wooden frame.
Condition: Fair. Many fractures, several omissions of color. A small tear on the right upper corner.
