AN EARLY 20TH C JUGEND WURTTEMBERGISCHE METALLWARENFABRIK (WMF) EPNS VASE FROM GERMANY.
An early 20th century chalice vase in Jugend Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) EPNS, Germany. The upper bowl is ornate with mythological motifs of a pack of wolves fighting a dragon. The tall pedestal has a simpler ornament, and the base is plain and minimal. The vase storytelling is a romanticized representation under the influence of Wagnerian operas of a legendary and hypothetical battle between the Fafnir dragon and Sigurd and Siegfried incarnated as wolves. A motif popularized by the pan-Germanic cultural movement.
