A FINE TURKISH TUFEK RIFLE WITH DAMASCUS BARREL AND GILDING, 18TH CEN.
This is a well-crafted Turkish tufek with a brilliant Damascus steel barrel. The bore is rifled and is about 15mm in diameter. The muzzle and the breech are both adorned with gold inlay. Just ahead of the breech is a silver cartouche set beneath a gilt cypress tree. Also at the breech is a large rear sight in the characteristic style of a tufek, which has been decoratively engraved and pierced with two holes. The lock mechanism has been engraved throughout with gilt foliate and floral designs and has a tughra mark in the gold to one side. The stock around the breech area has been inset with many brass pins and roundels. The stock is of wood with a tiger-stripe grain and is affixed to the barrel by four chased metal bands.
Turkey, Ottoman Empire, ca. 18th century.
