A FINELY MADE SPANISH ENGRAVED SAIL DAGGER, TOLEDO, 19TH C.

A Spanish sail dagger manufactured in the famous blade-smithing city of Toledo, in good condition and complete with original scabbard. The blade has a slight backward curvature, and its spine is beveled for the last 7 3/4 inches, the remaining section of the spine having grooves and indents until the ricasso. The ricasso is separated from the blade by two large circular cutouts. The lower half of the blade and the entirety of the ricasso are finely engraved with filigree imagery. The phrase 'ART.A F.A DE TOLEDO' can be seen on the obverse side of the dagger.

The guard has two fine quillons, from which begins the large sail-shaped handguard. The sail is decorated with a large, engraved emblem including a crest, some weaponry, and a helmet. The sail then tapers until it reaches the pommel. The grip is a rectangular prism finely wrapped with copper wire, with each side reinforced by a steel rib that runs down its center. The scabbard is engraved similarly to the blade and tapers until it is finished by an oblong finial.

Toledo, Spain, 19th Century.

L: 22.75 in. (57.79 cm.);

Condition: Overall condition is very good with minor signs of wear.
