A SHUKO TOMITA ORIGINAL WOODPLOCK PRINT, JAPANESE, "ATTACKING JIULIANCHENG OF QING KINGDOM" - 1894
This woodblock print is part of a series of battle triptychs under the title "The First Sino-Japanese War" depicting the Battle of Jiuliancheng (Battle of Yalu River), land battle between the forces of Meji Japan and Qing China.
Battle triptychs were produced in large numbers during the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars to satisfy widespread interest in the progress of the imperial army and maintain popular support for the conflicts. The prints idealized the heroism of Japanese troops risking their lives for the emperor.
Shuko Tomita (1868-?) was a Japanese woodblock print artist from the 19th Century who created depictions of the First Sino-Japanese War.

Provenance: Ex-Private Kensington, London, UK.Condition: All panels are connected. Foxing throughout. Edges and folds are creased. The red pigment is slightly smudged. Tearing along the fold of the first and second panels from the bottom to the middle. Tearing of second and third panels in the middle and at each corner.
