RARE ANTI-SEMITIC GERMAN NOTGELD (3)
Three paper emergency currency for Sternberg, Germany from 1922. These Notgeld notes, 3 x 4 in. each, were to commemorate the burning of 27 Jews at the stake in 1492. One shows a priest giving consecrated wafers to the Jews as an offering of conversion to Christianity. The second shows the Jews stabbing the wafers and blood spilling out, symbolizing the Jews' responsibility in killing Christ, (related to a historical charge of allegedly murdering a Christian child to use in the process of making matzos). Third, the Jews are being burned at the stake for their crimes. Notgeld was made during the Weimar Republic's period of hyperinflation. Individual towns and villages would make their own currency with different art or scenes. These Notgeld examples can be found in 'La Question Juive en Europe 1933-1945' (1985) by Gerard Silvain, page 259. The reference book is also offered in this auction.
