ULRICH VON HASSEL
Pair of books from the library of German Diplomat Ulrich von Hassell (1881-1944), a member of the German Resistance, Hassell took part in plans to overthrow Hitler. Hassell unsuccessfully proposed to the British the resistance would overthrow Hitler if Germany kept all of its territorial conquests. On 29 July 1944, Hassell was arrested by the Gestapo for his involvement in the 20 July plot. On 8 September, after a two-day trial at the German People's Court (Volksgerichtshof), over which Roland Freisler presided, he was sentenced to death and executed the same day. Included are the book 'Neue Bilder' (New Pictures) and 'Schattenbilder' (Silhouettes) by Herbert Eulenberg, Verlag von Bruno Cassirer, Berlin, 1918. Inside the front cover is von Hassell's personal bookplate bearing the family coat of arms.
