A lot of two postal covers commemorating important milestones in space exploration.
1) Cover commemorating the first successful orbital flight by John H. Glenn. Cancellation stamp dated February 20th, 1962, original autograph of WALTER DORNBERGER in blue pen. Dornberger (1895-1980) was a leader of Nazi Germany's V-2 rocket program and other projects at the Peenemuende Army Research Center. After WWII, he was released and brought to the United States under the auspices of Operation Paperclip.
2) Commemorating the flight of Sputnik 1, the first artificial Earth satellite launched by the USSR in 1957. Two identical cancellation stamps dated October 4th, 1970. Signed by ERNST STUHLINGER in blue ink. Stuhlinger (1913 - 2008) was a German-American atomic, electrical, and rocket scientist brought to the United States as part of Operation Paperclip.
