19th Century Blue Velvet Promenade Dress c1880. The lot features an eye-catching 19th century blue velvet promenade dress. The bodice has a classic late 19th century shape and styling details such as a high standing collar and puffed sleeves as well as wide black silk passementerie trim with black net inserts in a floral motif. The bodice also has a light yellow silk insert at the bust also trimmed in black passementerie with a silver and gold tone brooch set with 3 cornflower blue oval faceted glass stones. The inside of the bodice features stays, inner silk tape belt, and finished edging in shades in shades of pink. As well as a built in padded bust improver on either front side and hook and eye closures. The matching blue velvet skirt features 2 ribbed blue silk inserts at the front, each with 6 double black silk passementerie button and knotted cord closures, as well as a twisted black silk cord at the hem. The back of the skirt is skillfully pleated and has a short train. The skirt has an inner blue silk skirt with a stiffened hem, velvet inner edging, and a ruffled edge. Laying flat the bodice measures: bust 15'', waist 11'', sleeve 22''. The skirt measures: waist 11'', front length 38'', back length 46''. The pairing is in good/fair condition with very slight fading to the black silk trim, and the silk velvet becoming brittle and beginning to shatter on both puffed sleeves and near the waist of the skirt.
