Rachel V. Hartley (1884 - 1955) Watercolor on paper, signed lower right, piece measures 6 x 9 and 12 x 15 inches w/frame. Born in New York City, she was the granddaughter of George Inness and the daughter of sculptor Jonathan Hartley. She began to paint and sketch at age 10. She studied at the Art Students League of New York and later there became a teacher. She is known for American Impressionism. She was friends with Sgt. Whistler and Hassam. She later studied art in Paris and the French influence is seen in her best works. She is listed in "Benezit" among other prestigious American publications.
