WWII Named Eagle Squadron Medal Group RAF & 8th Air Force POW Fighter Pilot
Named Medal Group to Robert Gordon Patterson. 1st Lt Robert G. Patterson was a WWII fighter pilot who was a member of the famed "Eagle Squadrons" that helped the British fight Nazi Germany before the United States entered the war. During the war he was attached to the 335th FS, 4th FG, 8AF USAAF formerley a 121 Eagle Squadron RAF Spitfire pilot. He flew Spitfires and P-47 Thunderbolts on 70 combat missions over Europe. On his last mission, on October 8, 1943, Patterson was shot down over Bremen, Germany, while escorting bombers. He evaded the enemy for 53 days before being captured in Amsterdam, according to military records. He spent the rest of the war in Stalag Luft I, a POW camp in Barth, Germany. The accounts of that day include his aircraft being attacked by German fighters over Holland. He was able to bale out and managed to evade capture for a time, but was finally captured in Amsterdam as a Prisoner of War (POW). Pattersons Awards include: DFC, AM (3OLC), PH, POW, WWII Victory, EAME. Included in this group only is a Boxed and engraved Distinguish Flying Cross (DFC), 8th Air Force Felt Patch, U.S. Insignia, Caterpillar Club Pin (PRES BY IRVING), U.S.A. felt tab, WWII English Defence Medal, WWII The 1939-1945 Star Campaign Medal, 1941 Engraved Good Conduct Medal, Boxed Air Medal (not named), Royal Air Force RAF padded pilot wing, and 1939-1945 British Campaign Medal with detached ribbons. Nice overall condition for its age.
