Military Medal, George V 1st type, named to: 244968 L Cpl T Tracey 8/DS Coy RE (8th Divisional Signal Company Royal Engineers). Thomas Tracey was born on 28/08/1880 in Sunderland, Co Durham..He enlisted as a pre-war regular soldier at Newcastle upon Tyne on 13/08/1907 into the 2/Scottish Rifles on a 12 year engagement. He served with the BEF in France from 04/11/1914
as a signaller in the Scottish Rifles and transferred to the RE (Signals) as a Pioneer on 12/04/1917, becoming a Telegraphist on 23/05/1917. He was promoted to LCpl
and awarded the Military Medal (MM) towards the end of 1917, probably for the Third Battle of Ypres; MM London Gazette dated 30/10/1917. He was taken POW by the
Germans on 27/05/1918 and repatriated after the Armistice on 28/11/1918. He was transferred to ‘B’ Army Reserve on completion of his 12 year engagement on
07/03/1919. After his discharge from the Army he resided with his brother James Tracey in Sunderland.
He was also entitled to 1914 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. The Medal is heavily polished – hence only Fine (F) condition, but clearly a medal often worn, with pride!
