AN OTTOMAN PALA SWORD
Mounted in the Ottoman province of Syria, the characteristic horn grips with large, rolled and flattened pommel, with wootz guard and fine, broad heirloom Ottoman blade finely wrought of ribbon or twistcore damascus steel, and deeply struck at the left forte with a maker’s mark reading, WORK OF HASSAN on a worn gold ground, with pronounced back edge terminating in a rare armor-piercing tip. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard, the steel mounts elaborately inlaid in silver in characteristic motifs. Mid-19th century, blade earlier. Scabbard covering and suspension cord replaced. Overall length 96cm. Condition III
