ANTIQUE AFRICAN GABON CARVED WOOD VUVI TRIBE MASK
A rare antique traditional African hand carved wooden tribal mask from the Vuvi tribe of Gabon. The face depicts gently arching brows above thin, slit-like eyes, delicately carved nose and sensual lips. The upper hair part is adorned with engraved detailed patterns. The Vuvi live in the central region of the present day Gabon. Their art is known for their painted figures and masks. They have produced various forms of masks: helmet, facial, flat, and several other types. The facial and flat masks are the most popular. Circa the early 20th century.
