Marshall Arisman, American, 1938 to 2022, acrylic on paper, Bud Powell. Signed to the center left. Framed. This painting was used as the cover illustration for the 1982 reissue of Bud Powell's first album, titled Inner Fires, released in 1953 by Elektra Musician, El 60030. The Collection of Bruce Lundvall. Provenance: Doyle Auctions, New York, June 25, 2014, lot 117. Auction paper labels on the front and on the backside. Marshall Arisman was an American illustrator, painter, storyteller, and educator, known for Illustration-macabre images, distorted figures, book art. He studied advertising art at the Pratt Institute, graduating in 1960. He received an Ida Gaskell Grant to travel and study in Europe after graduating. He completed military service, then began his career as a graphic designer, working for General Motors. He went on to produce illustrations for major American periodicals including The New York Times, Mother Jones, The Nation, OMNI, Time, and Penthouse. He has also illustrated books, including Fitchers Bird, and Frozen Images, published by Visual Arts Press. Marshall Arisman, an illustrator whose provocative and often violent work appeared in The New York Times, Playboy and other major periodicals from the 1960s onward. Mr. Arisman, whose work appeared in The New York Times and other major periodicals, was a storyteller who mined his personal biography for inspiration. Arismans paintings have been exhibited in a number of one man shows in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Permanent collections that include Arismans paintings include the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian, and the Museum of American Art. One of a kind artwork.
