Alexandre Nikolaevich Benois, Russian, French, 1870 to 1960, watercolor and ink painting on paper depicting a costume design of a knight, 1948, probably for Giselle, a romantic ballet in two acts with music by Adolphe Adam. Signed with initials and dated lower right. Matted. Alexandre Nikolayevich Benois was a Russian artist, art critic, historian, preservationist and founding member of Mir iskusstva, an art movement and magazine. As a designer for the Ballets Russes under Sergei Diaghilev, Benois exerted what is considered a seminal influence on the modern ballet and stage design.
