EISENHOWER, ZHUKOV, AUCHINLECK & DEVERS SIGNED MENU
Photo album belonging to Samuel Bayard Garton Jr., a soldier with the 29th Infantry Division on D-Day who later worked in the officer's mess at General Eisenhower's headquarters in Frankfurt am Main. Garton was one of the first Americans to enter Berlin on June 5, 1945 as a member of a party which included Eisenhower and Field Marshal Montgomery. Affixed within the album is a 4pp. 8vo. original typed menu showing the meal served to high-ranking officials at Eisenhower's headquarters on June 10, 1945, signed by six prominent military officials, including DWIGHT EISENHOWER, Soviet general GEORGI ZHUKOV, commander of the Sixth Army group JACOB DEVERS, British army commander CLAUDE AUCHINLECK, and two unidentified. Interestingly, Zhukov presented Eisenhower with the Soviet Union’s highest decoration, the Order of Victory, at Frankfurt am Main on this date, likely just before or after this dinner took place. The album also includes a postcard of Eisenhower's headquarters, as well as a small booklet about the 29th Division, newspaper clippings and articles about Garton's military service, newsletters from Camp Croft, Garton's personal tickets and IDs, various French and German banknotes, postcards of England, Germany, and France, photos of Garton himself, and various notes and photographs from women and children in Frankfurt. Very good.
