Trompe-L'oeil Book-Shaped Cigar Box. La Flor De Longfellow, c. Early 20th Century. - This vintage trompe-l’oeil cigar box is constructed from wood and designed to simulate a thick, bound book. The exterior is finished with decorative paper covers featuring a multi-colored mosaic pattern. The spine area includes a central horizontal band containing four circular portrait medallions. The simulated page edges are finished with marbled paper. The interior lid reveals a large lithographed label titled La Flor De Longfellow, featuring an arched portrait of the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The inner lid and label are marked with several purple ink stamps reading OLE J. OLSON. R.R. 1, Jewell, Iowa. A handwritten ink signature, appearing to read John Olson, is present on the lower-left portion of the inner lid. The front inner rim of the wooden compartment is printed in red with the slogan SMOKE LONGFELLOW CIGAR.
