Identified Iowa Sword - Silas Freeman, 26th Iowa - An identified Iowa Sword to Silas Freeman, 2nd Lt of the 26th Iowa Infantry. The sword featured etched panels and the following is etched onto the locket of the scabbard ”Silas Freeman | 2 Lieut. Co. F | 26th Iowa. I.” Silas Freeman was a resident of DeWitt, Iowa and enlisted on 8.14.1862 as a 2nd Lieutenant. In October of that year, Freeman was commissioned into ”F” Co of the Iowa 26th Infantry. He resigned from duty on February 4th, 1863. The 26th Infantry was organized at Clinton, Iowa and mustered in September 30th, 1862. They moved to St Louis, then onto Helena, Arkansas by October of 1862. Included with the sword are detailed research records of Silas Freeman.
