Modelled after the form of a traditional Chinese general's jar, it features a dominant gem-red glaze. Both the lid and jar body are faceted, embellished with lavish heavy gilding and painted with Rococo-style scenes of romantic court life of French nobility.It serves as an exquisite decorative ornament as well as a small storage vessel for precious items, such as oriental tea leaves and ginger.Founded in Vienna in 1718, the Vienna Royal Porcelain Manufactory was established by Sir Claudius Innocentius du Paquier (1679-1751), a Dutch porcelain master formerly of the Meissen Manufactory, commissioned directly by Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor (1685-1740).It is the second-oldest premium hard-paste porcelain manufactory dedicated to European royal use, ranking only after Germany's Royal Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, the oldest of its kind in Europe.In its early phase, it mainly followed and imitated Meissen porcelain. Early productions were renowned for opulent Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical styles. In the middle and later periods, it developed its own distinctive artistic character, surpassing Meissen in magnificence and becoming the most sought-after luxury porcelain among European royalty and nobility.The base hallmark derives from the heraldic shield of the Archduke of Austria. Following Austria's establishment as a republic after World War I, it was renamed Augarten Wien Austria.From March 1938 to April 1945, Austria was under German occupation and lost its territorial sovereignty.
