Terumat HaDeshen, Venice, 1519, Bomberg Press. First Edition.

The Sefer Terumat HaDeshen, the Shu"t (Responsa) section, by Rabbeinu Yisrael Isserlein. Venice, printed by Daniel Bomberg, [5279 (1519)]. First Edition.

Rabbeinu Yisrael Isserlein, author of Terumat HaDeshen (born approximately 5150 - passed away 5220, 1390-1460), was one of the foremost Gedolim (great Torah scholars) of the early Ashkenaz period and a key figure in that era. He engaged in halachic discourse with the Maharil, Mahari Weil, and Maharam Mintz, who spoke highly of him.

His book, Terumat HaDeshen, is one of the most important foundational Seforim (holy books) upon which Rabbi Yosef Karo based his Shulchan Aruch, and the Rama (Rabbi Moshe Isserles) based his Hagahos (notes/glosses).

Generally, the Sefer Terumat HaDeshen was printed together with the book "Pesakim U'Ketavim, " which is not present here. [The book "Pesakim U'Ketavim" was compiled by an unknown student of Rabbi Yisrael and primarily contains responsa from him, but also includes many rulings and customs that the compiler heard or observed from his rebbe].

Stephansky Seforim Yesod 274

132 leaves. 23 cm. The title page has undergone some restoration. Water stains. Some minor wormholes. A handsome half-leather binding.
