Book owned and signed by A. Shirk (Dr. Adam Shirk), who graduated from University of Pennsylvania Medical Class in 1862 . Dr. Adam Shirk (December 20, 1840 – January 12, 1907) then served in the Union Military as a physician, and  served as surgeon for a Pennsylvania regiment during the Civil War , and most notably a Union surgeon during the battle of Mobile Bay, which resulted in Admiral Farragut taking Fort Gains and Fort Morgan near Mobile, Ala.  The book was presumably owned and used by Dr. Shirk during the Civil War until it was gifted to J.
