18th c. Russian Icon, Baroque One-Piece Riza, Mary & Jesus - Late 18th c. original Russian Icon hand painted tempura on wood covered with an ornate one-piece gold riza / oklad, decorated in Baroque style with jewel and pearl ornamentation to crowns; with gold inscribed banner across lower edge of icon “Pod Twoją obronę uciekamy się” meaning “Beneath Thy Protection”, a standard prayer to Mary. Piece depicts a version of the Our Lady of Częstochowa icon, a venerated icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary housed at the Jasna Góra Monastery in Częstochowa, Poland. The back of the wood panel shows two cross members or ”back slats” (one slat missing). Housed in an ornate gold gilt gesso wood frame | Approx. Size: Condition: Very good + condition.
